PATROL-AFRICA statement on successful outcome of elections in Botswana

Nov 6, 2024 | Press releases

PATROL-AFRICA congratulates the people of Botswana on the democratic and peaceful manner in which they changed their government, which has been in power for the last 58 years. Congratulations also go to the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) and President-elect Duma Boko on their historic victory in the 2024 elections.

PATROL-AFRICA also commends the outgoing President, Dr Mokgsweetsi Masisi of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), who accepted the will of the people without any opposition. His magnanimity in victory is all the more remarkable considering that he served only one term, something that is rare in politics in Africa. The peaceful transition of power we have witnessed in Botswana, is something that should be emulated and normalized in Africa.

Since Botswana became independent from Britain in 1966, it has been led by the BDP, which was founded by the country’s first leader, Sir Seretse Khama, who left an indelible mark on the country for other leaders to follow. Thus, the change has been all the more remarkable and exemplary for the people of Botswana and the continent of Africa.

We at PATROL-AFRICA look forward to working with President-elect Boko, a well-known human rights lawyer, and his entire administration, as they attempt to strengthen the rule of law in Botswana in the interests of everyone in the country and beyond.
